Tokat Province is in the north of the country, not far from the Black Sea. The climate is one of hot summers and cold winters. However, the influence of its close proximity to the Black Sea ensures that extremes of climate are tempered. The alluvial soil, being a mix of sand, gravel and sediment, is the result centuries of deposits that have washed down the mountains into the Tokat river.
The region produces close to 10% of the country’s wines. The predominant grape varieties are Narince, Öküzgözü and Boǧazkere.
Mustafa Vasfi Diren, the founder of the Diren Winery started production in 1958 after 18 years of preparation. In 1963, the winery won the first wine competition in Turkey and from that moment on, he has continued to invest in modern methods of vineyard husbandry, wine making techniques and technology. Diren wines have gained many national and international awards. Here are reviews of 3 examples from their output.
