Region 1 - Thrace wines

The cultivation of vines and winemaking in Thrace is mainly concentrated within Marmara. It borders the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and mild winters. It can get very humid with levels reaching over 70% at times.

The soil varies from lime to gravelly loam and dense cracking clays. The most widely used grape varieties are Adakarası, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cinsault, Gamay, Kalecik Karası, Merlot, Papazkarası, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion, Shiraz and Viognier.

Wine maker Gülor was the first boutique wine producer in Turkey and introduced some international grape varieties to the country. The business was founded by businesswoman and philanthropist Güler Sabancı in 1993. They cultivate 20 hectares of vineyard located in Afiarköy, which is close to the city of Tekirdağ. Three examples of their output are:
