Food plays an important role in In the Mood for Love, as it signals points of development in the relationship between the two main characters, Mrs Chan (Maggie Cheung) and Mr Chow (Tony Leung). In this scene, they try the food that the other’s partner would choose as a way of trying to understand how their partners came to have a relationshio with each other.
The eagle-eyed will notice that at the end of the clip, Maggie Cheung is wearing a different qipao; a device that Wong Kar-Wai used to show that time had passed, implying here that the two played out this scene on a number of occasions.
